Good morning, this is Kasmira. A long-simmering conflict in east Democratic Republic of Congo has escalated at an alarming rate since Sunday after Rwanda-backed M23 rebel fighters captured the city of Goma, with the UN and aid groups yesterday warning of hundreds of people wounded and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

US president Donald Trump’s decision to declassify a CIA over the origins of the Covid-19 outbreak has reignited a fierce debate over whether it could have originated from a lab leak. And the ICC is seeking justice for atrocities committed in Sudan, with arrest warrants soon to be issued by its prosecutor.

Fear of widespread atrocities as Rwanda-backed rebels seize Goma. The M23 armed group has declared to be in control of DR Congo’s Goma, home to a million residents and hundreds of thousands of refugees – a deadly scenario made possible by the international community’s wilful indifference.
