By hosting talks between Ukrainian, US and European officials over a prospective peace plan for Ukraine – one partly sketched by the Russian Kirill Dmitriev – Switzerland treads a fine line between pushing for peace and defending the international legal order it so often champions.

🕊️US, Ukraine work on ‘refined’ peace plan to end war with Russia. Talks wrapped up in Geneva on Monday, with Washington and Kyiv issuing a statement saying revisions had been made to the original US 24-point proposal to end Europe’s deadliest war.

💸Global Fund raised $11.34bn with a surprising US pledge. The fund for Malaria, TB and HIV’s replenishment event in Johannesburg last Friday reached nearly two thirds of its $18bn target, with the US providing over a third of it.

🏔️Davos assured Trump ‘woke’ topics were off the agenda. Donald Trump agreed to attend the World Economic Forum’s gathering in January after certain topics, like female empowerment and diversity, the green transition, climate change and international development finance, were toned down. Trump apparently wanted to make sure his appearance would play well with his MAGA base.

🇮🇷Iranians in Geneva denounce a record number of prisoner executions. As the UN General Assembly last week recognised the 1988 massacre of thousands of dissidents by the Iranian regime, Iranians gathering at an event to mark the anniversary called for international attention on the current wave of executions – totalling more than 1,600 this year so far.
