UN rights chief: Iran executions ‘state sanctioned killing’. Volker Türk said on Tuesday that Iran’s government was weaponising the death penalty to strike fear in citizens and stamp out dissent, warning that recent executions in the country amounted to “state sanctioned killing”. Four people have been executed in the last month as part of the ongoing crackdown on protests, according to the UN, while at least 17 more people are currently facing the death penalty. UN officials say Türk is pressing to visit the country, but no date has been set.

The UAE’s controversial climate envoy tipped to chair Cop28. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber is the United Arab Emirates’ special climate envoy and first in line to become president of Cop28, starting on 30 November in Dubai. He is also the current Emirati industry minister, and CEO of the country’s national oil company, meaning his pending appointment has already begun to stir up controversy.
