Hello, this is Michelle. In just five months, Israel’s relentless campaign to take out Hamas has claimed the lives of thousands of Palestinians, injured many more and destroyed entire parts of Gaza. Now, the UN is warning that famine is starting to take hold of the northern part of the Strip as Israel blocks aid convoys.
For Francesca Albanese, the UN-backed human rights expert on the occupied Palestinian territories and one of Israel’s fiercest critics, these are acts that point to genocide – an accusation that Israel has rebuked vehemently. |

Here's what else is happening
|
That’s how many people are going hungry in Haiti, including 1.6 million who are on the verge of famine in the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to aid groups. The Caribbean country is on the brink of collapse as armed groups tighten their grip while Haiti leaders struggle to form a transitional government following the acting prime minister’s resignation.
Violence levels have hindered relief efforts. The World Food Programme has managed to distribute meals but says deliveries remain “sparse” while Unicef has warned that “the situation is creating a child health and nutrition crisis that could cost the lives of countless children”.
Meanwhile the UN’s $674 million humanitarian appeal for Haiti has been funded up to a mere seven per cent.
