Good morning, this is Paula. As the UN Human Rights Council kicks off its fall session today, there are growing concerns over how the global body’s liquidity crisis is hampering its role in promoting accountability and justice.
Not far from all the ruckus, we will be hosting a discussion at lunchtime about one of the worst humanitarian crises the UN body is currently dealing with – Sudan. We will be joined by Mona Rishmawi, one of the experts of the council’s fact-finding mission investigating grave violations committed in the war-torn country over the last year, as well as other remarkable panellists. Sudan war: what way forward?
For over 16 months, Sudan has been ravaged by war, displacing more than 10 million people and leaving tens of thousands dead. Yet, international efforts, from Jeddah to Cairo to Geneva, have failed to stop the fighting. With negotiations at a standstill and the humanitarian crisis deepening, what will it take to resolve the conflict? Can the country be steered again towards civilian rule? Can accountability and the hope of seeing justice one day pave the way for lasting peace?
Join Geneva Solutions and the Geneva Press Club at lunchtime at the Domaine de Penthes for a discussion with Mohamed Salih Yassin, a former member of Sudan’s transitional government, Mona Rishmawi, member of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, which released a scathing report on Friday, and Amnesty International’s Sudan researcher, Abdullahi Hassan.
